Is SEO Worth It for a Small Business in 2026?

Research | Published 5 October 2026 | Salar Digital Solutions

Short answer: yes. SEO matters for small businesses as much as it ever did. What has changed is the pace. AI features in Google are changing how people search and how results look, so the businesses that do well are the ones that keep up.

What has changed in search

SparkToro, working with Similarweb data, found that 68% of US Google searches in the first four months of 2026 ended without a click, up from about 60% in 2024. SparkToro links much of this shift to AI Overviews, which now appear on more than one in five searches. It also describes this as the fastest change in the last decade.

In plain words: more people get answers inside Google itself. Search is moving quickly, and your website has to be easy for both Google and customers to understand.

Where SEO still works well for small businesses

SparkToro notes that some kinds of searches still reward good SEO: branded searches, local business searches and high-intent searches where someone is ready to act. That describes most small business customers. Someone searching for a local service is usually close to buying.

Local trust also matters. BrightLocal's 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey found that 97% of consumers read reviews for local businesses. The average person uses six different review sites, and Google, Facebook and AI tools are among the most common places people look for local recommendations. Being easy to find, with a clear website and good reviews, helps in all of these places.

What SEO actually is

Google describes SEO as helping search engines understand your content, and helping people decide whether to visit your site. It is not a trick. It is a set of practical improvements: clear page titles, useful content, a fast and mobile-friendly site, and accurate business information.

What SEO can and cannot promise

Google itself says there is no guarantee that any particular site will be indexed. Any company that promises you a ranking is promising something nobody can control. Good SEO is steady work that improves your chances over time, and results take time to build.

How to get started

  1. Make sure your website clearly says what you do and where you work.
  2. Give each main service its own page.
  3. Keep your business details and reviews up to date.
  4. Write helpful answers to the questions your customers ask.
  5. Track what works and adjust, because search keeps changing.
